Decarboxylation, Tincture, and a Hot Toddy
Show Notes and Transcript
Hot Toddy Recipe
Alcoholic Version:
8 oz hot water
2 oz bourbon
Mandarin orange slices
Fresh rosemary sprigs
1 Tbls honey
1 ml cannabis tincture
Muddy the orange, rosemary and tincture together in the bottom of glass, pour hot water over it, add bourbon and honey.
Non-Alcoholic Version:
Replace water and bourbon with hot tea.
Jane:
Hello. It is the Educated Edibilista here, Mary and Jane. And we are here with episode six to talk about decarboxylation, and the reason you would need to do that before you create edibles or tinctures is to activate the…
Mary:
THC.
Jane:
Yes. The medicinal properties of your marijuana. So, go ahead.
Mary:
So, basically, if you tried to just eat a bunch of weed, just straight from the plant or dried, it’s not really going to actually get you high or get you the medicinal qualities you want, so you have to activate it. So, you will see it written as THC-A, and then when you decarb it, I’ll explain that in a second, it goes to THC, it takes that A off, basically the A stands for an acid.
Mary:
So, decarbing, so if you think about when you typically use weed, you smoke it, so that actually decarbs it immediately. It heats it up, that’s what decarboxylation is, it just heats it up and breaks it down and makes [crosstalk 00:01:05].
Jane:
Changes the molecular structure.
Mary:
Exactly.
Jane:
Science.
Mary:
We’re not going to get into all the chemistry, two things we’re not good at, chemistry and math.
Jane:
And math.
Mary:
And we’re doing both of them right now. Yay us.
Jane:
We’re doing it so you don’t have to.
Mary:
Exactly. So, we’re actually going to decarb two different ways, in this video we’re going to do it by hand using our air fryer, because we are 40 something women and we love fucking air fryers.
Jane:
True story.
Mary:
Everyone has one in their home or you have toaster oven or a regular oven.
Jane:
Yeah, you can do it with whatever you have.
Mary:
Exactly, you don’t have to go out, you don’t have to buy anything special or anything like that. So, first we are going to take our flower that we bought and break it up before we put it in the air fryer.
Jane:
Flower.
Mary:
So, we are doing three and a half grams and we’re going to make a tincture basically, so that we can give you a recipe for a gorgeous and tasty fall drink.
Jane:
Cannot wait to see this strain.
Mary:
And we’re going to give you two options, an alcoholic one and a non-alcoholic version, because some people don’t want to mix cannabis and alcohol. These are my favorite things. Jane, you crack me up.
Jane:
Love it. And the reason for the gloves is because it’s sticky.
Mary:
Very sticky, yes. Jane’s being a trooper and doing this for us.
Jane:
I like to get my hands dirty, so to speak.
Mary:
This smells amazing.
Jane:
It does.
Mary:
So, we chose this strain because it has limonene terpene in it, so it smells like lemons and it’s going to be really, really good in the fall drink.
Jane:
Perfect for a drink, mm-hmm (affirmative).
Mary:
Yeah, perfect.
Jane:
We need smell-o-vision.
Mary:
I wish you could… Who was it? Emeril, with smell-o-vision, I was trying to think of who that was, we need smell-o-vision so bad right now.
Jane:
We do. Just take our word for it, it smells really good.
Mary:
It smells amazing, yeah. So, if you look, there are so many recipes for tinctures online, we’re going to be using vodka because we cannot get Everclear in Virginia unless you have a grain license, which we do not.
Jane:
We don’t have that yet, we’ll probably be working on that next.
Mary:
Yeah, that’s next. I’ll get my still out in the backyard and make our own moonshine, that’s probably an easier step at this point.
Jane:
I can get behind that.
Mary:
Exactly. So, if you’re using vodka, you can also use brandy.
Jane:
That sounds nice, warming.
Mary:
Yeah, it really does, I wanted to do that one next. It’s a little less strong than if you’re using Everclear or moonshine, I’m fine with that, this is 100 proof vodka so it’ll probably be a little better. And speaking of this vodka, my husband makes fun of me a lot, we’re going to have to flip this video so you can actually see it, it’s called Aristocrat and it is the cheapest vodka ever.
Jane:
Yeah, I know it.
Mary:
But my husband, I made him do a taste test.
Jane:
A blind taste test?
Mary:
Blind taste test against Sky, Belvedere and Tito’s, let me tell you who won.
Jane:
Really? I’m fascinated.
Mary:
Three times he did it, three times, and Aristocrat won every single time.
Jane:
Wow, and he had a hangover or anything?
Mary:
No, it’s fabulous, it doesn’t have…
Jane:
Wow, that’s surprising because the cheaper stuff usually has…
Mary:
It usually has additives and everything, yeah, but no, it’s amazing, highly recommend it, 16 bucks for 100 proof.
Jane:
Hey, it’s a little cheaper than Gray Goose, that’s all I’m saying.
Mary:
That’s right, I think Gray Goose might have been one we did too, yeah.
Jane:
Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Mary:
Yeah, so you don’t have to grind your flower up for decarbing, we’re going to show you using a machine on the next video called the LEVO 2, that one you do need to grind and we’ll show you that whole process.
Jane:
LEVO is so cool. But this works, this is like you really don’t have to have any special equipment.
Mary:
This is wonderful, been doing it forever.
Jane:
Exactly.
Mary:
So, yeah, we’re just going to try. But this one does make the house smell.
Jane:
Yes, beware of that.
Mary:
From what I understand, so we’re going to see exactly how strong that is, we’ll let you know.
Jane:
Yes.
Mary:
This is literally the first time we’re doing this, so [crosstalk 00:04:49].
Jane:
Look at that, fancy.
Mary:
Okay.
Jane:
I pulled off that one little stem, I didn’t think we needed that.
Mary:
Yeah, let’s show what it looks like there.
Jane:
Ain’t that pretty?
Mary:
Like this, in little pieces, it’s super pretty. We don’t have any crazy colors in this one, so this is a sativa, which I thought would be good for a drink as well because it gives you more energy rather than making you tired, if you’re adding with alcohol, for me I’d be out like a light. So we’re going to use an energizing strain and see what happens.
Mary:
Yeah, so we’re going to decarb it first in the air fryer, we’ll come back, show you what that looks like, and then literally you’re just going to soak it in vodka for a couple of days.
Jane:
Do you want to tell them about the time and temperature for that, or?
Mary:
Probably a good idea.
Jane:
Okay.
Mary:
Yes, thanks, Jane.
Jane:
Didn’t mean to steal your thunder there, but…
Mary:
Yeah, you know my mind.
Jane:
It’s okay.
Mary:
Yeah, so you’re going to do low, most people say around 220 degrees for about 35 to 45 minutes. So, I think we’ll probably go on the longer side just to make sure, yeah.
Jane:
Remember, don’t skip this step.
Mary:
Yeah, don’t skip this.
Jane:
Because then you’re going to be very disappointed.
Mary:
Very, yeah.
Jane:
And have some wasted materials.
Mary:
Yeah, let’s not do that. Okay. Are we ready?
Jane:
Yeah, let’s do it.
Jane:
We are back, we are going to take out herbs out of the air fryer, because it is finished decarbing, so, ta-da. Look at that. All ready to go and we’re going to be putting this into our tincture for our festive autumn beverage, which we are really excited to try.
Mary:
So, we’re going to make our tincture now, so we have kind of done the math a little bit, we’re going to show you a whole worksheet and everything, but basically we had to assume some things, so as we have discussed before, there’s not really labels and stats on a lot of the marijuana that you can buy, if you can buy it in your state.
Mary:
If you can’t buy it, like in our state, of course there’s no label aid. So, we’re kind of playing a guessing game, so we’ll see how it works out.
Jane:
Yeah, we’re hoping for the best.
Mary:
Yeah. So, a lot of the recipes that you’ll find online are using a whole ounce of marijuana, that is a fuck ton guys.
Jane:
Yes.
Mary:
So, we cut everything down to three and a half grams, and figured out how many ounces of vodka we’re going to soak that in, figured out in the ounces how many milliliters that is so that we can figure out dosing.
Jane:
We did the math.
Mary:
You’re just going to have to trust us on the math part now, because we can not explain it.
Jane:
Totally.
Mary:
You just need to see the worksheet, and there’s plenty of those available online as well, we’re going to link you guys. So, we have our decarboxylated flower, very pretty. Definitely smells in the house.
Jane:
It does, it does.
Mary:
Yes.
Jane:
And we told you we’d tell you truth about that.
Mary:
It absolutely does.
Jane:
So, if you live somewhere where you’re concerned about other people smelling that, definitely take that into consideration.
Mary:
Yeah, so we’re going to show you the LEVO in the next video that has no smell, a machine that will decarb for you and infuse, so you’ll see that. But I kind of put on the stove my little… Because I don’t like the smell of food after I’ve eaten, so I use this a lot, I wanted to see if it would work for weed and I think it’s done a pretty good job.
Jane:
Yeah, if nothing else, it smells really good.
Mary:
Yeah, so basically you just fill a pot with some water, put some vanilla in there, and some rosemary sprigs, literally, and just boil it. It takes away fish smells, bacon, I don’t like the smell of cold bacon, I like the smell of hot bacon, I’m a freaking weirdo. So, when we make bacon, I have to put this… Just, yeah. So, it does pretty well, it smells very good.
Jane:
It smells very nice, yes.
Mary:
So, it has hidden something.
Jane:
We could have probably put some of those orange peels in there if I’d have thought about it before I got rid of them.
Mary:
Yeah, so, we’re going to make the tincture, you’re going to have to let the tincture sit. There are lots of recipes that you can put it in your, what do you call those things, oven things?
Jane:
Oven thingies.
Mary:
[crosstalk 00:09:13]. You know, crock pot, there we go.
Jane:
I don’t know what the fuck she’s talking about.
Mary:
You can put it in your crock pot to heat it up to make it go faster I guess is the theory, or you can just put it in a jar, let it sit for a few days or a week.
Jane:
The old fashioned way.
Mary:
Or as long as you want.
Jane:
Low tech right here, baby.
Mary:
We’re going low tech because that’s just how we are.
Jane:
Yeah, that’s what we do.
Mary:
Yeah. So, we’ve got out jar here, I’m just going to put the flower in, hopefully not spill it anywhere, it should be fairly simple. We made it.
Jane:
Yeah, you’re good. Nice.
Mary:
There we go, there’s that. And so we are going to do a half cup of vodka. And this is brand new, [inaudible 00:09:58] open it, and I’ve prepped my little measuring cup, so I’ve got my cup here. So, four ounces, or a half cup.
Jane:
You’re doing great with the math.
Mary:
So, we figured out that a half cup has how many milliliters?
Jane:
I’ll have to consult my worksheet for that.
Mary:
I believe it was 118, check on that.
Jane:
Yes, 118 servings. According to our very scientific calculations, which we did double check.
Mary:
We did.
Jane:
For the record, but we, again, not math professionals.
Mary:
Yeah. So, we have a little tincture bottle that we’ll be putting it in, but literally this is just what it looks like, give it a swirl around there.
Jane:
It looks like not much in that giant jar.
Mary:
It really doesn’t.
Jane:
But when you were pouring it in the measuring cup it looked like a lot.
Mary:
Exactly, yeah. And literally, so these are 30 milliliter bottles, so it’s going to make three and a half of these, so that’s a lot of tincture. Most of the recipes that you’ll see have you start with one milliliter, which is basically one dropper, I’ll show you the dropper once this is done and we make our drink. So, it’s going to make quite a bit, but, yeah, I would say minimum two days let it sit.
Jane:
Yeah, I think so.
Mary:
To a week, to get everything out of there. Yeah, so we’ll be back and making a drink for you in just a bit here.
Mary:
We’re back.
Jane:
We’re back.
Mary:
Our tincture has sat for a couple of days, I have filled it in the little 30 milliliter bottle and the dropper is supposed to be one milliliter, so the way that we [mathed 00:11:31], is that a word? Mathed [crosstalk 00:11:36].
Jane:
It is now.
Mary:
So, the way that we mathed, we assumed the dropped is one milliliter which I can’t even get it full so we might have to do two based on that, and it will be five milligrams of THC. So, if you wanted more than that, if you wanted 10 milligrams, but five to 10 is usually where people start.
Jane:
I think it was six.
Mary:
Was it six?
Jane:
I think it was six.
Mary:
I thought 5.9, [crosstalk 00:11:59].
Jane:
It was very close to six, so we just rounded it up to six.
Mary:
It was very close, so, yeah. So, I would start with one, if you’re starting, just start with one dropper, see how it goes.
Jane:
Yeah, especially if you’re mixing it with alcohol.
Mary:
Yeah, so we’re going to do an alcoholic version and a non-alcoholic version of a hot toddy with orange and rosemary and the tincture has the [limonata 00:12:22], so I think that will go really well.
Jane:
Yes, mm-hmm (affirmative). Very exciting.
Mary:
So, let’s get into it, so we have our glasses and we’re going to put some orange slices at the bottom.
Jane:
Make it pretty.
Mary:
Look at these, cute. And then that’s your rosemary, I’m stealing your rosemary. That’s a perfect star on there.
Jane:
Yeah.
Mary:
So, we’re going to put the rosemary in there and then your tincture.
Jane:
Which smells amazing by the way.
Mary:
Yes, so I’m going to do one but I have to do it in halves because it wasn’t coming out.
Jane:
Thank you.
Mary:
There’s yours, and then we’re going to muddle that, so if you don’t have a muddler, which I don’t because I don’t make mixed drinks, we’re just using a spoon, so basically what you’re trying to do is get the oils out of the orange and the rosemary, so you just want to squish it. Don’t tear the orange apart, you’re just trying to get some juice out.
Jane:
And oil from the rind.
Mary:
Yeah. So, just kind of smoosh it around in there a little bit. And this is a really great drink not only for fall and winter, but if you’re not feeling well, so we’re doing one with bourbon and one with tea, so it has honey in it, so it’s really great if you’re just not feeling well. There you go.
Jane:
Thank you.
Mary:
Do that. So, once you’re done with that then we’re going to add our hot water, so I’ve got the tea kettle here and…
Jane:
If you can reach.
Mary:
[inaudible 00:13:51], look at that, guys, eight ounces, hopefully I made enough water.
Jane:
I’m sure it’ll be fine.
Mary:
We’re actually going to do a little less.
Jane:
Okay. Fancy.
Mary:
That’ll really bring out the flavors too, I also think our cups are not big enough really for eight ounces, plus the alcohol or tea that we’re going to add. So, you’re supposed to do eight ounces of hot water, I’ll put that there.
Jane:
That looks so pretty already, it smells good.
Mary:
It really does. Yes.
Jane:
Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Mary:
You can really smell the orange and the lemon, that’s fabulous.
Jane:
Yes.
Mary:
Okay, so I’m going to be doing tea and Jane is going to be doing the bourbon. I had my husband choose which he wanted because he’s going to be drinking this, because it’s the middle of the afternoon.
Jane:
Right. Some of us have to work.
Mary:
Yeah, some people. So, two ounces of whatever you are adding into.
Jane:
Well, actually, that was probably just one, yeah, you need two.
Mary:
That was one, yeah, you want one more in there.
Jane:
I don’t want to cheat him for sure.
Mary:
No.
Jane:
That would not be nice. Look at that, it looks so good.
Mary:
It looks really pretty, let me have that shot glass, please, thank you.
Jane:
I’m sorry.
Mary:
I’m going to spill this everywhere.
Jane:
You want to do it over the top of the measuring cup?
Mary:
That would have been a better idea.
Jane:
Live and learn.
Mary:
Here we go.
Jane:
You could just dip it in maybe if it would fit, I don’t know.
Mary:
I’m getting tea everywhere, that’s okay.
Jane:
It’s okay, it’s just tea, no use crying over spilled tea.
Mary:
And it’s my farmhouse table, it’s supposed to look old.
Jane:
That’s right.
Mary:
It all works.
Jane:
And if we spilled tincture, that might be worth crying over.
Mary:
That would be a problem.
Jane:
Yeah, you’d see us sucking it up with the dropper.
Mary:
We haven’t done that, so, yes. Okay, so it’s all in there except for our honey, so let’s get a little bit out here. About one teaspoon.
Jane:
We’re not [mathing 00:15:47] this, we’re just eyeballing it.
Mary:
No. I pretty much know what a teaspoon of honey is because I drink tea all the time. All right, mix that up.
Jane:
Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Mary:
Very pretty with the orange and the rosemary. Look at that. Gorgeous color, even in these blue glasses, I wonder what it would look like in clear. Gorgeous.
Jane:
We’ll try that next time.
Mary:
Yeah. Just take a little sip here.
Jane:
Cheers.
Mary:
Cheers. Our first drink with cannabis.
Jane:
So good.
Mary:
Is it good with the bourbon?
Jane:
Yeah, it really is.
Mary:
Yeah? Okay. I need a sip of the bourbon.
Jane:
You do.
Mary:
The tea is very nice and subtle because of the extra water.
Jane:
You can really taste the rosemary in this one.
Mary:
Mm-hmm (affirmative).
Jane:
That’s good, isn’t it?
Mary:
That’s very good with the bourbon.
Jane:
I don’t know.
Mary:
My husband’s going to have a good afternoon.
Jane:
Right, this could be dangerous, we might not get any other work done if we started down this road.
Mary:
Yeah, so if you are scared of doing cannabis with alcohol, I think that is a really good option.
Jane:
Yeah, very enjoyable.
Mary:
I could even see adding some pineapple juice to that would be really good.
Jane:
Yum.
Mary:
Yeah.
Jane:
Lots of room to experiment for sure.
Mary:
Absolutely, yeah. So, if you love mixing drinks, this is a whole new world.
Jane:
I love it, a whole new world.
Mary:
Wait, we said we weren’t going to sing. Was that the song we had last-
Jane:
When did we say that?
Mary:
In the last video where we sang.
Jane:
That was the last video, I’m not worried about that.
Mary:
My goodness.
Jane:
Hey, you get education and entertainment right here people.
Mary:
Entertainment, and it’s all free.
Jane:
It’s all free.
Mary:
Look at that. Okay. So, I think that went pretty well.
Jane:
Yeah.
Mary:
I don’t think I would do anything differently.
Jane:
No, I don’t think so, I think the whole process was pretty easy, yeah.
Mary:
It was pretty easy, yeah. Although then the smell in your home, you will need to adjust for that if that’s a concern, but like I said, that boiling water that I do, I don’t smell it at all anymore, honestly.
Jane:
Yeah, same.
Mary:
So, yeah.
Jane:
Either that or we just got used to it.
Mary:
That is true.
Jane:
Who can say? It would be interesting now if somebody walked in your door if they would smell it, that would be the real test, right?
Mary:
Yeah, actually I do have a friend coming tonight, so I’m not going to say anything and see what happens.
Jane:
And see what she says, yeah.
Mary:
Yeah, so that’ll be interesting.
Jane:
We’ll report back.
Mary:
Yeah. Okay, guys, so the next video we’re going to do, the LEVO, which is going to do the decarboxylation and infusion all on its own, we’re going to be using vegan butter.
Jane:
Super exciting.
Mary:
So, we’ll see how that goes, and then we’re going to use, once that is actually infused, our next video we’re going to make, what are we making?
Jane:
Cannanna bread.
Mary:
Cannanna bread. I said banana bread, cannanna bread, yes, we have coined that now.
Jane:
Yes we have.
Mary:
I don’t know if anyone else has, but we’re [crosstalk 00:18:38].
Jane:
There’s a trademark on that now.
Mary:
It is my favorite snack, banana bread.
Jane:
It’s going to be so good.
Mary:
So, I think it’ll be cool to see if there’s any flavor in it or if it’s just…
Jane:
I’m thinking the cannanna bread would actually be really good with one of these, yeah.
Mary:
It really would, that’s what I was thinking too, yeah.
Jane:
It would be a nice melding of flavors and comforting.
Mary:
Yeah.
Jane:
So.
Mary:
So, there you go, I think the tincture was super easy to start with, can’t taste it in here at all, I haven’t tried just taking a milliliter of it just in my mouth so I don’t know if that tastes yet, we’ll have to try that at some point.
Jane:
Yeah, we’ll have to maybe see later.
Mary:
But otherwise I think it’s fairly good with any drink, you should be able to put it in there, have your little wine spritzer in there.
Jane:
Yeah.
Mary:
Holidays are coming, which is also why we wanted to do a fall one, so Thanksgiving, something fun.
Jane:
Mm-hmm (affirmative), this would make Thanksgiving extra festive.
Mary:
Or at least tolerable.
Jane:
Or at least tolerable.
Mary:
Depending on where you’re spending it.
Jane:
Sometimes that’s all you can ask for.
Mary:
It’s true. I’m not saying at.
Jane:
I’m giving thanks for these beverages.
Mary:
Absolutely, thank you all for joining us and we’ll see you next time.
Jane:
Thanks, guys, see you next time, bye.
