Map of Marijuana Legalization by State
Mary:
Hi, everyone, and welcome to the Educated Edibilista.
Jane:
Hi.
Mary:
Where we create, heal and have fun with cannabis as middle-aged women.
Jane:
Yes, and we’re taking you along for the ride.
Mary:
That’s right, so what are we talking about today?
Jane:
Today, we are talking about ways to acquire weed.
Mary:
Kind of important.
Jane:
Yeah. Well, I mean we’ve been leading you up to it, probably should help you out there.
Mary:
Yeah. You got a little background, so now you actually might want to try it one of the ways that we discussed, so where can we get it?
Jane:
Well, the first thing we want to point out to you is, it is federally illegal and although some states have moved to legalize and some are in the process of moving to legalize, you need to be aware of the laws in your own state. They are constantly changing and updating and stay current, so please, stay within the law in your area.
Mary:
Yeah. Yeah.
Jane:
Mary.
Mary:
We can’t say much more than that. We’re going to give you some links so you can look it up if you’re not sure.
Jane:
Yes.
Mary:
If there has been an update, so some states have, there’s different levels. Okay. Some states have decriminalized it. Maybe you might just have a very low fine if you get caught with it. Not technically legal to have it, but they’re not going to send you to jail for a long time or anything like that.
Jane:
Right, right.
Mary:
They are, hopefully along those lines, getting rid of the court records from all the people that have been in the past. So check on that if you have had a conviction in the past. Hopefully, maybe that can go away. Keep up with those things because, obviously, anything like that can really affect your life.
Jane:
For sure, for sure.
Mary:
Yes.
Jane:
There are basically two avenues. Medical marijuana, if you have a condition that would allow you to access medical marijuana, you would need to acquire a card in order to access that, and you would get that from a medical marijuana dispensary.
Mary:
Most states seem to be starting with medical first.
Jane:
Correct.
Mary:
Yeah.
Jane:
I would tend to agree with that, and as Mary said earlier, we’re going to link some resources for you to check into that so you can see what’s cool where. Please do verify because, again, things do change what seems like very quickly.
Mary:
Yes. I actually just read one state was going backwards.
Jane:
Really? I hadn’t heard that.
Mary:
Yeah. I can’t remember what state it was, but that was a little, I think, will be frustrating for people.
Jane:
Well, yeah, I would think so.
Mary:
Yeah.
Jane:
Definitely make sure you know what’s going on currently wherever you are. The second, what reason you might choose to acquire marijuana is for recreational use. Again, some states have legalized that. I’m sure you’ve heard of California, Colorado.
Mary:
Las Vegas.
Jane:
Yeah. But others are either already legalized for recreational use or are moving in that direction. If you are in an area where you can do that, some places that you could check out would be retail brick and mortar stores that might have them.
Mary:
Although some states have legalized it, but don’t allow you to buy it yet.
Jane:
Correct. Correct.
Mary:
We are in one of those states.
Jane:
Yes, and we’ll talk about that as well. But aside from visiting your local neighborhood mom and pop recreational dispensary, head shop, whatever you want to call it, there’s a lot of online stores, of course. We live in a modern age and you can get pretty much anything online. But again, know the legality of where you are located as far as getting things online.
Jane:
Also, you may live in a state where you are allowed to grow your own. A nice thing about homegrown is if you have a green thumb, or you want to see if you have a green thumb, you’re controlling everything.
Mary:
Exactly.
Jane:
Of course, there is an investment in terms of time, money, effort. But at least, what I like about that is, you know what is going into it?
Mary:
Yeah. You know the pesticides, you know all that stuff, the soil you’re getting, and there’s a lot of options with that too we’re going to talk about. I mean, I think we’ve mentioned we are going to do that just so we know the whole process ourselves.
Jane:
Yes. Yes.
Mary:
I do find it a little intimidating, but if it’s an option, you can control it and you have, depending on the state, so Virginia, now we are allowed to grow four plants and they can be grown inside or outside. They just can’t be seen from the public. So if you have a larger plot of land, you could do outside. I live in a little city.
Jane:
So if we’re going to be walking by, you don’t want to have your marijuana plants just sitting out on the sidewalk.
Mary:
Yeah. Yeah, and you don’t want people to know. I mean, obviously, we’re talking about this because we’re doing videos, but if you are going to be doing that stuff, I would not be telling people just so you don’t have any break-ins or anything like that.
Jane:
Right.
Mary:
But that is probably not necessarily the easiest, but the most dependable would be grow your own.
Jane:
It could be the most rewarding, for sure.
Mary:
I think so.
Jane:
There is something to be said for something that you had a hand in.
Mary:
It’s your baby.
Jane:
Yeah, it really is.
Mary:
Yeah. Yeah.
Jane:
I think with that happening in some states, the prevalence of being able to go to educational seminars to learn firsthand from farmers who are growing marijuana and hemp. Learning from them about best practices and the availability of just like growing any other plant, you need good soil. You’re going to need fertilizer. You might need lights.
Mary:
You need good seeds, clones, however you’re doing it.
Jane:
Yep. Yep. We’re pretty excited to have the opportunity to attend some of these seminars and learn more so we can share with you guys.
Mary:
Exactly. We’re still educating ourselves.
Jane:
Yeah.
Mary:
I don’t know. We’re going to probably say that every single video.
Jane:
Because it’s true.
Mary:
It really is true, and yeah, we know a lot of people don’t have the time to do everything and go to all that stuff.
Jane:
Right.
Mary:
So, we’re going to bring it to you, make it super easy. Other states, so Virginia, like I said, it is legal but you cannot buy it or sell it currently, so getting something from friends. We have some of these events that Jane was mentioning. People are bringing a clone or bringing seeds to share, so you can share with other people. And that might be a little scary if you don’t know anyone who is partaking of stuff. But I think it’s going to become more well known as everything starts legalizing everywhere, so it won’t be as embarrassing to ask questions and stuff.
Jane:
There’s a community around it. Yes.
Mary:
To ask questions and stuff. I think there are definitely right now Facebook groups are going.
Jane:
Oh, yeah.
Mary:
Like grower symposium, I don’t even know what the term is that I’m thinking of, but it sounded boujie.
Jane:
Yeah, symposium was exactly the word [crosstalk]
Mary:
There are options, you just need to make sure that you know everything. But the interesting thing is, we have mentioned before, is Delta-8.
Jane:
Yeah. I’m glad you brought that up.
Mary:
Delta-8 is from hemp plants, and it can have up to 0.3% THC. If you’re worried about drug testing or something like that, probably not a choice for you. But if you want to introduce yourself to cannabis and at about the same time thinking about THC and CBT, it’s a great option because it is basically legal everywhere. I think there are a few states that have tried to put rules in, but you can get it online. I’m going to send you, link you guys, the place that I get my favorite which is this, Sativa. They’re little gummies.
Jane:
Nice.
Mary:
You’ll be able to see them in there. This was really what I started with. Jane’s husband introduced me to Delta. I’d never heard of it, and he had just heard of it at that time too. That’s what started all this, I think.
Jane:
I mean, I don’t want to say it’s new because I’m sure it’s not new to people that knew, but it’s new to us, relatively.
Mary:
New, it’s new to us. We did a lot of research and ordered a bunch from different companies just to see everything. It’s a really great way to start if you’re not in a state that actually THC is legalized.
Jane:
And/or if you don’t want something that’s as intense. I think I mentioned in one of the other videos, I’ve heard it referred to as “pot light.”
Mary:
Yeah.
Jane:
It’s not going to have as strong of a psychoactive effect.
Mary:
Exactly. Yeah. If you’re thinking about anxiety, that stuff, or sleeping, it’s a really great option to start with. Literally, just search Delta-8. There is so much information, and if you guys are like our town, pretty much every single vape store and there’s, I don’t not even know anymore, like 20,000 of them.
Jane:
Yes.
Mary:
They almost all carry Delta-8, so you can go in and see the product and they have everything that you would find in edibles, smoking. They have flower, they have vaping. This vape is a Delta-8 vape currently. The brownie, cookie brownie thing is Delta-8, so they really have everything.
Mary:
You can explore all of the things that we discussed in one of our last videos about different ways to use marijuana. You can explore all of those with Delta-8. If you’re in a state that isn’t legal yet, you can still start educating yourself and trying products and seeing what works for you.
Jane:
Absolutely. Yep.
Mary:
Yeah.
Jane:
Good to have some options.
Mary:
Yeah. Yeah. I think trading with friends is pretty cool. I think that’s going to be cool in the future.
Jane:
I think that’s going to be a growing area, no pun intended.
Mary:
Growing area, yeah. We’re going to coordinate with growing and do different things so you can try more without the financial outlay of doing everything yourself.
Jane:
I feel like it’s beneficial too, because you can, “Well, what’s worked for you? What are you doing as far as soil? How much watering, the lighting?” I mean, there are so many factors.
Mary:
Oh, my gosh.
Jane:
Just any gardening group. I mean, whether they’re growing tomatoes or whatever. I mean, people talk about these things and it’s helpful.
Mary:
Yeah. One of the conferences that I went to, I learned more from the person I was sitting next to because they’d been doing different… they’d been doing hydroponics, and he’d built the room himself and all the things that you needed to think about, and there’s just so much to learn. It’s kind of intimidating to grow, I think.
Jane:
Agreed, agreed.
Mary:
It may not be where you want to start, but I think it’s also a learning process for me, which is why I want to do it.
Jane:
Absolutely.
Mary:
How everything works and all of that. Those are your options. There are other things that you need to potentially think about that. Like my husband had to think about if you have a concealed carry permit, what that does? Because marijuana is still federally illegal even if your state is everything legal, you can buy it, you can sell it, all that stuff. You still do have some worries, so look those things up. This is why we’re here, to educate you guys, get you thinking, asking questions.
Jane:
Yep.
